Way of traveling: Multi transportation

The summer of 2020 is finally here! The summer when “everyone” is vacationing in Norway. ☺️ Due to the coronavirus, most trips abroad have been canceled, and like many others, we had a planned trip that had to be canceled. But what could be better than exploring Norway? Our amazingly beautiful country! Personally, I haven’t been north of Trondheim, except for a trip to Tromsø, but then you don’t see everything in between. So, the summer of 2020 will be all about exploring Norway in its entirety!

A one-way ticket to Nordkapp is booked! We’re flying to Alta and then taking a bus onward to Honningsvåg/Nordkapp. That’s where the journey begins, and the plan is to make our way south again using various modes of transport!

Here are some tips to make your trip smooth and enjoyable:

1. Plan Strategically

  • Map Your Route: Outline key destinations and figure out the available transportation options (bus, train, ferry, car, etc.).
  • Check Timetables: Research schedules for trains, buses, ferries, and flights to ensure smooth connections.
  • Allow Buffer Time: Build in extra time between connections in case of delays.

2. Pack Smartly

  • Travel Light: Opt for a carry-on or a small backpack to avoid hassle when changing transportation.
  • Multi-Use Items: Bring versatile clothing and gear that works across different activities and weather conditions.
  • Essentials Handy: Keep important items (tickets, ID, snacks, water, and a phone charger) within easy reach.

3. Embrace Variety

  • Mix Transport Modes: Combine planes, trains, buses, bikes, ferries, or rental cars for a unique experience.
  • Local Transport: Use local buses, bikes, or even walking to immerse yourself in the culture and scenery.

4. Budget Wisely

  • Passes & Discounts: Look for travel passes, like Eurail, Interrail, or regional bus passes, to save money.
  • Book Ahead: Secure tickets for long-distance travel (e.g., trains, flights) in advance for the best rates.
  • Compare Costs: Use apps to check fares across different modes of transport.

5. Be Flexible

  • Alternative Routes: Be open to changing plans if better options arise.
  • Layovers: Treat long layovers or stops as opportunities to explore a new place.

6. Stay Organized

  • Apps: Use apps like Google Maps, Rome2rio, or Moovit to plan routes and track live schedules.
  • Document Everything: Keep digital copies of tickets, reservations, and an itinerary on your phone or cloud.

7. Explore the Journey

  • Enjoy Scenic Routes: Choose routes that offer great views (like trains in the Alps or ferries in Norway).
  • Local Interaction: Engage with locals for tips and insights—especially for off-the-beaten-path routes.

8. Accommodation & Food

  • Stay Close to Stations: Book accommodations near transportation hubs for easy access.
  • Local Cuisine: Try regional food options along your journey. Station kiosks and ferry cafeterias often have unique offerings.

9. Safety & Comfort

  • Stay Secure: Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas.
  • Stay Comfortable: Bring a travel pillow, noise-canceling headphones, or other items for long rides.

10. Relish the Adventure

  • Document Your Journey: Take photos, jot down notes, and enjoy the diversity of travel modes.
  • Live in the Moment: Use downtime (on buses or trains) to relax, read, or simply enjoy the view.

Multi-transportation travel is all about embracing spontaneity and the joy of the journey. Happy travels! 🚍🚆✈️
