Ljubljana, Slovenia

After an early start to the day, we arrived in Ljubljana around nine in the morning. We dropped off our luggage at the hostel and explored the city. Our accommodation was super central, just a minute away from the Dragon Bridge. At noon, we had booked an excursion: a boat tour and a guided walk around the city. It was a very nice tour, and we got to taste some local specialties.

Ljubljana is a city filled with history, culture, and stunning natural beauty. Its compact size makes it perfect for exploration on foot, and its mix of old-world charm and modern energy ensures there’s something for everyone. Here are the highlights of Ljubljana that you shouldn’t miss:

Ljubljana Castle

Perched atop a hill overlooking the city, Ljubljana Castle is a must-visit landmark. This medieval fortress offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside. You can reach it by hiking up a scenic trail or taking a funicular ride. Inside, explore the museum exhibitions, climb the watchtower, and learn about the castle’s history. It’s also a great spot for a romantic dinner at the castle restaurant.

Triple Bridge (Tromostovje)

One of Ljubljana’s most iconic landmarks, the Triple Bridge is a masterpiece of architect Jože Plečnik. This unique trio of bridges connects the medieval old town with the more modern part of the city and is a hub of activity. Strolling across the bridge, you’ll enjoy views of the Ljubljanica River and the lively square it spans.

Prešeren Square

This central square is the heart of Ljubljana’s social life. Named after Slovenia’s national poet, France Prešeren, the square is surrounded by stunning architecture, including the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation with its striking pink facade. It’s a great place to relax, people-watch, and take in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

Dragon Bridge

The Dragon Bridge is another architectural gem and a symbol of Ljubljana. Its four dragon statues are a popular photo spot, and the bridge itself is a testament to the city’s Art Nouveau heritage. Legend has it that the dragons guard the city, adding a mythical charm to this already fascinating site.
